    Foreword

Lingnan University is a leading Asian liberal arts University with international recognition, distinguished by outstanding teaching, learning, scholarship and community engagement. We were named as one of the “Top 10 Liberal Arts College in Asia” by Forbes 2015, performed among the top 21% in the QS Asia University Rankings 2020, and were ranked 2nd worldwide for “Quality Education” by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Impact Rankings 2020. In the QS Asia University Rankings 2020, Lingnan’s score of Citations per Paper has a jump of 29 places in that year and a leap of 140 places over the preceding year. Such international recognitions underpin Lingnan’s core values – Education: Care for Learning, Research: Impact with Care.

Lingnan University scholars are accelerating their research impact. They have published a total of 909 research papers from 2017 onwards, collaborated with scholars from 542 institutions in 76 countries and the monographs they authored or co-authored were acquired by over 1,500 libraries worldwide. The excellent research landscape of Lingnan University is now showcased in the platform Lingnan Scholars (https://scholars.ln.edu.hk/). I am glad that the Library has been tasked to produce this booklet for the past three years to record the monographic publications of our academics and further widen their research impact. This booklet features the 134 books and monographs published by our professors in different subject areas like finance, fiscal and monetary policy, cultural policy, creative industries, health and ageing, population, gerontechnology and institutions and governance during the period from 2011 to 2020.

The Library will continue to support our academics and scholars to heighten their research impact by broadening the dissemination of their research outputs in the Lingnan Scholars, researching in the application of research data and offering more research support services. I am sure with the concerted efforts of the University community, we will continue to excel and advance.

  • Living Stillness by Nunzio PACI

    Living Stillness

    Nunzio PACI

The artist-in-residence in the Fall of 2019-2020 was Mr Nunzio Paci, an Italian artist whose paintings and drawings bring out unexpected connections between human or animal anatomy on the one hand, and plants and flowers on the other hand. The intertwining of the human form with other natural forms is a motif in Art Nouveau art, but Paci’s drawing style seems to owe more to Renaissance anatomical and botanical drawings such as Leonardo da Vinci’s.

Moreover, like Leonardo, Paci relies on close observation, for example, of anatomical wax models and even genuine human corpses. In other words, he draws from life, or, strictly speaking, from death. As the present exhibition catalog makes clear, dead animal bodies are becoming more prominent in his work. The result is strangely beautiful, but not macabre. Human and animal anatomy is revealed as a part of life; life, in turn, is presented as a stage within a larger cycle that includes also death and decay.

Other contemporary artists (e.g., Damien Hirst) have taken an interest in anatomy and death, often in an attempt to deliver “shock value”. Paci is aiming for a more timeless quality—as timeless as human anatomy perhaps. Unsurprisingly, his work has already been exhibited around the globe: in Europe, the US, the Middle East, and Asia. Paci has also been the recipient of several awards.

Our sizable pool of experienced scholars in the arts, business and social sciences disciplines combine scholarly work with applied, policy-oriented research, and address topics in areas like finance, fiscal and monetary policy, cultural policy, creative industries, health and ageing, population, and institutions and governance. In the last ten years, our professors have published over 1000 articles in international refereed journals. This booklet features the 179 books and monographs published by our professors during the period from 2010 to 2019.

With the support and concerted efforts of its stakeholders and building on its successes to date, in the next 50 years the University will be wellpositioned to achieve an even higher level of excellence and distinction in the higher education arena locally, regionally, and internationally.

  • Continuity by Aleksandar EFTIMOVSKI

    Continuity

    Aleksandar EFTIMOVSKI

The sculptures displayed in this exhibition demonstrate knowledge transfer and cultural exchange between Aleksandar and Lingnan students in the process of creating site-specific works. They are largely made by timber from Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber, which was founded in North Point on Hong Kong Island in 1947, but later relocated to Chai Wan and then its current site in Kwu Tong, Sheung Shui in 1982. Unfortunately, this rare survivor of timber business has recently been identified as one of the first areas to be cleared for the controversial North East New Territories Development Plan launched by the HKSAR government. When Typhoon Mangkhut battered Hong Kong on 16 September 2018, it felled at least 17,000 trees. Aleksandar collected some broken branches of the fallen trees on Lingnan campus and in nearby area, allowing students to select this unique material for their projects. He and his students have injected new life to wasted materials and transformed them into beautiful sculptures which, in turn, provoke our curiosity and thinking.

Bauhinia Rhapsody : the literary journal of Lingnan University 2018-2019

Undergraduate majors, Department of English, Lingnan University and Michael T. LUONGO

    Editor's Note

The Lingnan Literary Journal itself, the book you have now in your hands, is a work of Lingnan University students. That which we write and leave behind is how we communicate with the future, and it is in this way that the students of Lingnan, here during the 2018-2019 academic year, will continue to have impact long after they have left the campus here in Tuen Mun, nestled against the foothills of Hong Kong’s mountains.

The work you see here is that of my own students, from either of my two classes, Arts, Creative Writing & Journalism, taught in the Fall and Spring of my time here, and Journalism Principles & Social Media, taught only in the Spring. Save for Mary Garcia who designed the covers, the editorial team came from my Fall class. There is also the writing and visual efforts of students I have never met in person, but which spoke to all of us. Others I met along the way at numerous events on campus, engaging them in conversation and asking them to submit their work. The team also recruited, through passive means like posters, and through setting up tables on campus. Still other constributions came from Professor Ingham’s class, gifting us with interesting intertextual work based on songs and poems, a favorite method of his for inspiring his students’ creativity. Mike’s deep desire to engage with his students, in and out of the classroom, was also something that inspired me to always try to give more and reach out to students across the spectrum at Lingnan. I believe through my efforts and the efforts of so many others, the journal as you see it now represents a broad range of Lingnan’s diverse student body, locals and exchange students alike.

  • Let Me Tell You a Story = 讓我說一個故事 by Sau Ping Adam WONG (黃修平)

Let Me Tell You a Story = 讓我說一個故事

    Sau Ping Adam WONG (黃修平)

"Let Me Tell You a Story" is a showcase of nine short films made by the students and a trailer of them edited by the Artist-in-Residence, Mr Adam WONG Sau Ping.

Wong’s films show a humanistic perspective and employ storytelling to reveal incidents and experiences of real people contemporary society. In the spring of 2019, he teaches the course VIS3298 Studio Practice with a theme on “The Art of Storytelling by Film and Video” and gave a seminar on “Adam Wong On His Filmmaking, from VHS to 4K” at Lingnan University on 25 March. In his course, Wong guides nineteen students to acquire an understanding of filming based on primary research from real people and their backgrounds, use film as a language to tell stories of daily lives, and to produce short documentary films. This screening entitled We Tell Stories celebrates the project outcome of Wong and his students over the past four months. While Wong follows up the post-production of his new film, the sequel of The Way We Dance, Lingnan students work in groups of two to create nine short fictional films, each of them narrates a story of people and their environment based on students’ research and creativity and the film language they have learned from the Studio Practice course. The films come with distinctive topics, varying from love stories of both homosexual and heterosexual relationships, karate and adapting to the society, to political implications and dating experience. All these creative topics are presented in a humanistic approach.

  • Hortus Conclusus 囚 by Lantian D. (蘭天)

    Hortus Conclusus 囚

    Lantian D. (蘭天)

    The Work of Lantian D.

One of the most basic things to understand about Lantian D.’s work is that it is born out of an acute awareness of the weaknesses inherent in contemporary art. The sorry state of the contemporary artworld is even the theme of one her earliest paintings, Crime and Punishment, which contains some suggestive depictions of artists and intellectuals who may bear some responsibility for the present situation: Jacques Derrida, Marcel Duchamp, Tracy Emin, Michel Foucault, Clement Greenberg, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Charles Saatchi, and Andy Warhol are all depicted as witch-like creatures from one of Francisco Goya’s black paintings, alongside contemporary works by the Chapman brothers, Ron Mueck, and so on. A more recent portrait touches upon the same theme. Decline portrays a young boy guarding the precious Wallace collection of European art in London. The moth on the window behind the boy suggests that the collection is like an old garment that is no longer worn: tucked away in a stuffy environment, and out of tune with the surrounding culture, which, as the title suggests, is in decline.

  • 說不出的痛 : 家暴兒童的內心世界 by Suk Mun, Sophia LAW (羅淑敏)

    說不出的痛 : 家暴兒童的內心世界

    Suk Mun, Sophia LAW (羅淑敏)
