  • Community impact feedback questionnaire (CIFQ) : the user manual by Ka Hing LAU and Robin Stanley SNELL

    Community impact feedback questionnaire (CIFQ) : the user manual

    Ka Hing LAU and Robin Stanley SNELL

    Service-learning is an experiential pedagogy designed to benefit all stakeholders, comprising students, educational institutions, instructors, and perhaps more importantly, community partner organizations (CPOs) and the community as a whole. Through serving the community via the CPO, students consolidate their knowledge and skills while applying these in real-life situations. Effective service-learning, therefore, should demonstrate community impact as a result.

    However, the community impacts arising from service-learning have not been well demonstrated in past research. One reason for this has been the lack of an effective, standardized tool for measuring the impacts. To address this problem, Lingnan University, in collaboration with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Baptist University, and The Education University of Hong Kong, consolidated relevant research findings into a conceptual framework about the community impact of service-learning, from which the Community Impact Feedback Questionnaire (CIFQ) has been developed.

    The primary objective of the CIFQ is to serve as a standardized and reliable assessment tool for measuring the extent to which a service-learning project is perceived to have various kinds of community impact. The CIFQ is also designed to capture community impacts from the service recipients’ perspective, via the CPO as the service recipients' proxy.

    This manual explains the process of how the CIFQ was developed and validated. It also explains how the CIFQ should be administered and scored, and how its results can be interpreted. We envisage that if the CIFQ can be widely adopted, a more complete and reliable data set regarding community impacts arising from service-learning can be obtained. A fuller picture of the community impacts arising from service-learning can help inform how to further advance this experiential learning methodology, and how to derive further benefits for CPOs and the wider community.

  • 社區影響反饋問卷: 使用手冊 by Ka Hing LAU and Robin Stanley SNELL

    Ka Hing LAU and Robin Stanley SNELL

  • Building inclusive workplaces for lesbians and bisexual women in Hong Kong’s financial services industry by Denise Tse-Shang TANG, Stefanie TENG, Celine TAN, Bonnie LAM, and Christina YUAN

    Building inclusive workplaces for lesbians and bisexual women in Hong Kong’s financial services industry

    Denise Tse-Shang TANG, Stefanie TENG, Celine TAN, Bonnie LAM, and Christina YUAN

    Workplace inclusion is a core component of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Hong Kong. Workplace inclusion points to the need for employers to recognize diversity among employees, to acknowledge their contributions to the work environment and to raise professional standards for the work force. Diversity within a workplace indicates inclusion of persons with different backgrounds as in racial, ethnic, sex, health status, sexual orientation and gender identity. Women are already less represented at senior levels across various business sectors in Hong Kong. Lesbians and bisexual women face a double glass ceiling in the workplace as a result of both their gender and sexual orientation.

    Funded by Lingnan University’s Innovation and Impact Fund, and in partnership with Interbank Forum and Lesbians in Finance, Prof. Denise Tse-Shang Tang conducted an online survey and two focus groups targeting lesbians and bisexual women working in Hong Kong’s financial and banking industry. The aim of the study is to examine the specific challenges and barriers faced by lesbians and bisexual women in Hong Kong’s financial services industry.

    We found that only 37% of survey respondents were out at work, with 23% partially out to close colleagues. In other words, there are still key concerns with being out at work. On the issue of a glass ceiling for LGBT+ corporate employees, 18% of the survey respondents agreed and 47% somewhat agreed that such a ceiling exists. When asked whether it is harder for lesbians and bisexual women to come out in the workplace than it is for gay men, 32% agreed and 46% somewhat agreed. 27% agreed and 39% somewhat agreed with the statement that it is difficult for lesbians and bisexual women to climb up the corporate ladder. Other findings pointed to the low visibility of lesbians and bisexual women in corporate settings, lack of mentorship, increased levels of stress and anxiety, and the fear of being judged as both a woman and a lesbian. Masculine-presenting employees face significantly more scrutiny than cisgender female employees. Therefore, even though discussion on diversity and inclusion has been on the agenda for better corporate work environment in Hong Kong, there still remain gaps in raising awareness of lesbian and bisexual women’s issues.

    Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies, Lingnan University

    粵港澳大灣區的港資製造業經營情況、對灣區經濟貢獻與實現轉型升級發展策略顧問研究報告

    China Economic Research Programme(CERP), Lingnan University 嶺南大學中國經濟研究部

    本研究報告對於港資製造業這個領域的嶄新研究貢獻,主要歸結為以下幾個類別:

    1. 以多項第一手數據表明,並讓香港特區政府重新認識到港資製造業在「延外發展」模式經營下對香港整體經濟佔有非常重要帶動作用、貢獻和地位;
    2. 本報告通過挖掘包括國家工商總局在內的大數據方式,從而得出近年包括大灣區以至不同九個市在內的港資製造業企業數目、從業人員數目、註冊資本、營業利潤等的具體數字和變動情況;由於工商總局的註冊或登記數字的個案數比統計局的抽樣為主的統計數字更為具體,因而相關數字能夠更仔細的反映出港資製造業在大灣區內的經營情況,較具有參考價值;
    3. 本報告以大數據結合問卷調查、深入訪談等方式交叉分析,互補有無,能夠發現更多港資製造業企業對大灣區的經濟貢獻具體情況,有助外界尤其是特區政府和內地相關部委了解到港資企業特別是港資製造業對整個大灣區經濟的重要性,尤其港資製造業如何對專業服務業產生帶動作用,有助社會各界重新關注振興製造業和實現製造業轉型升級的重要性,從而推出更為切合實際的具體振興方案;
    4. 通過對不同企業和行業的深入訪談,可以令大家更為仔細了解港資製造業目前的經營情況、優勢所在和面對的挑戰,有助中小港資製造業企業借鑑相關經驗,從而發展壯大;
    5. 這份報告的對策建議部份,內容主要針對包括內地政府、香港特區政府,以及港資製造業企業三大部分,當中具代表性和可操作性的建議,如能獲得有關方面加以關注,對促進港資製造業企業以至整個大灣區的製造業發展均有裨益。有助業界尤其兩地政府知道發展壯大港資製造業事關回應全球產業升級大趨勢,需要讓香港和灣區九市、以至整個廣東和全國的大格局在這大趨勢中去分析和綜合規劃。

    嶺南校園 : 賞樹札記

    嶺南大學服務研習處

    此書的由來,緣於「服務研習藝行大使小組」留意到嶺大校園的建築及樹木同樣具備觀賞價值,遂進行實地考察及資料搜集,設計了嶺大校園建築及樹木導賞路線,並得到嶺大服務研習處推薦,於2015-17年間為中文系「記遊書寫」課程設計及安排校園建築和樹木導賞活動,得到同學們非常正面的回應,之後更有同學參與小組,為校內同學及社區人士提供校園導賞服務。

    2017年,「服務研習藝行大使小組」與嶺大服務研習處合作,在賽馬會「關愛.服務.研習@ 屯門」計劃的支持下,配合「記遊書寫」及「創意數碼影像」兩個不同學科的服務研習項目,將有關嶺大校園建築和樹木的導賞資料整理,編寫為《嶺南校園—建築遊賞》和《嶺南校園—賞樹札記》。

    《嶺南校園—賞樹札記》介紹共三十二種樹木,其中二十九種在校園核心範圍內。小組將校園分成A至H八區,用實地拍攝的樹木照片作介紹,以提供準確的環境線索去追蹤樹木的位置。各個樹種的介紹內容包括︰學名、科屬、原產地、生長環境、習性、用途、形態特色及一些相關趣味知識,還有一組四句的「觀賞提要」,介紹各樹種獨特之處,「賞樹、識樹」一章則提供了辨認樹種的基本參考資料。

  • Continuity by Aleksandar EFTIMOVSKI

    Continuity

    Aleksandar EFTIMOVSKI

    The sculptures displayed in this exhibition demonstrate knowledge transfer and cultural exchange between Aleksandar and Lingnan students in the process of creating site-specific works. They are largely made by timber from Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber, which was founded in North Point on Hong Kong Island in 1947, but later relocated to Chai Wan and then its current site in Kwu Tong, Sheung Shui in 1982. Unfortunately, this rare survivor of timber business has recently been identified as one of the first areas to be cleared for the controversial North East New Territories Development Plan launched by the HKSAR government. When Typhoon Mangkhut battered Hong Kong on 16 September 2018, it felled at least 17,000 trees. Aleksandar collected some broken branches of the fallen trees on Lingnan campus and in nearby area, allowing students to select this unique material for their projects. He and his students have injected new life to wasted materials and transformed them into beautiful sculptures which, in turn, provoke our curiosity and thinking.

    Bauhinia Rhapsody : the literary journal of Lingnan University 2018-2019

    Undergraduate majors, Department of English, Lingnan University and Michael T. LUONGO

    Editor's Note

    The Lingnan Literary Journal itself, the book you have now in your hands, is a work of Lingnan University students. That which we write and leave behind is how we communicate with the future, and it is in this way that the students of Lingnan, here during the 2018-2019 academic year, will continue to have impact long after they have left the campus here in Tuen Mun, nestled against the foothills of Hong Kong’s mountains.

    The work you see here is that of my own students, from either of my two classes, Arts, Creative Writing & Journalism, taught in the Fall and Spring of my time here, and Journalism Principles & Social Media, taught only in the Spring. Save for Mary Garcia who designed the covers, the editorial team came from my Fall class. There is also the writing and visual efforts of students I have never met in person, but which spoke to all of us. Others I met along the way at numerous events on campus, engaging them in conversation and asking them to submit their work. The team also recruited, through passive means like posters, and through setting up tables on campus. Still other constributions came from Professor Ingham’s class, gifting us with interesting intertextual work based on songs and poems, a favorite method of his for inspiring his students’ creativity. Mike’s deep desire to engage with his students, in and out of the classroom, was also something that inspired me to always try to give more and reach out to students across the spectrum at Lingnan. I believe through my efforts and the efforts of so many others, the journal as you see it now represents a broad range of Lingnan’s diverse student body, locals and exchange students alike.

    Hortus Conclusus 囚

    Lantian D. (蘭天)

    The Work of Lantian D.

    One of the most basic things to understand about Lantian D.’s work is that it is born out of an acute awareness of the weaknesses inherent in contemporary art. The sorry state of the contemporary artworld is even the theme of one her earliest paintings, Crime and Punishment, which contains some suggestive depictions of artists and intellectuals who may bear some responsibility for the present situation: Jacques Derrida, Marcel Duchamp, Tracy Emin, Michel Foucault, Clement Greenberg, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Charles Saatchi, and Andy Warhol are all depicted as witch-like creatures from one of Francisco Goya’s black paintings, alongside contemporary works by the Chapman brothers, Ron Mueck, and so on. A more recent portrait touches upon the same theme. Decline portrays a young boy guarding the precious Wallace collection of European art in London. The moth on the window behind the boy suggests that the collection is like an old garment that is no longer worn: tucked away in a stuffy environment, and out of tune with the surrounding culture, which, as the title suggests, is in decline.

    Suk Mun, Sophia LAW (羅淑敏)
