  • Manifold worlds by Ying Mui, Grace TANG

    Manifold worlds

    Ying Mui, Grace TANG

We start to know our world when we begin our existence, and we believe that the world is like what we see. But is the world we know the real world? It may just be a world of how we feel about the real world! We are born equipped with a set of sensors to perceive the world. Our perception of the world depends on these sensors. Other living things possess different sensors; they see their worlds differently from us and each other. Although we have different perceptions of the same world, we do exist in the same physical world.

The title of this exhibition is “Manifold Worlds”. I hope that we can bear in mind that there are many perceived worlds and that we should be more tolerant and understanding of each other.

In these “Manifold Worlds”, there are many traces of things in multifaceted space: the inhabitants’ masks, tree spirits with hearts linked to QR codes, foods of special forms, shelters in unbounded space, and unidentified and unrecognized movements recorded by the inhabitants of the manifold worlds. Still there is no sight of any physical beings. What the audience can see are the presence of them through different means.

Is this a world of the past or a deserted world in the future? What is this world telling us? Are we able to foresee our future? Do we have a future?

A village adoption project in Yunnan, China : sustainable micro-economy pilot : feasibility analysis of agricultural transition from tobacco to walnut planting

Karon WAN (尹嘉亮); Hok Ka, Carol MA (马学嘉); John LAW (罗兆湝); and Jenny CHEN (陈珍妮)

This report has been compiled to record and share our experiences and lessons learned from our walnut planting pilot program which is part of a micro-economy stream of our Village Adoption Project in Yunnan.

The walnut planting pilot was initiated to assist the sustainability of the micro-economy of Gezhangla Village, Yunnan, by working with the community to evolve its agriculture and reduce its a dependency on tobacco.

Jenny Chen, a student of Lingnan University, went to Yunnan for a preliminary study of the development of walnut planting program in Gezhangla Village from 30 December of 2012 to 5 January of 2013 and in the summer of 2013. Later, John Law, the Consultant of Strategy and Consulting of Deloitte China, also went to Yunnan with the service group from 15 to 18 September 2013 to follow up the project. During the trip, he also interviewed a number of farmers, school principals and teachers in the villages to collect more research data.

This report was compiled in joint efforts by Deloitte China and Lingnan University, which combines the observations and findings of walnut trees planting obtained during the service trip, and summarizes the development and progress of walnut planting in Yunnan villages. The report provides an overview of the tobacco leaves planting in the related villages. Then it reviews the progress of walnut tree planting in Gezhangla and Yangjia villages, and Gezhangla Primary School, Wanyaoshu Primary School and Shilata Central Primary School, and reviews the opportunities and challenges faced by schools and villages in walnut tree planting. This report also tackles different challenges and provides suggestions, while the conclusion focuses on the overall feasibility of walnut planting in Yunnan villages.

  • Postcards between friends : collaborative drawing and creativity pedagogy = 友愛明信片 : 協同繪畫與創意教學法 by Carol ARCHER (區勵志)

Postcards between friends : collaborative drawing and creativity pedagogy =

    Carol ARCHER (區勵志)

Postcards between Friends, an exhibition of extraordinary postcards. They're real postcards, complete with stamps, postmarks, and wear and tear, but they're special in three ways. First, they are all hand-drawn. Second, every postcard is a collaboration between at least two people. And third, every postcard has been through the mail at least twice.

The process works like this. One artist starts a drawing and, without adding any verbal instructions or commentary, mails it to another. The second artist finds the postcard in her mailbox, completes the drawing, and mails it back to the sender. The results are surprising because each collaborative postcard is a small work of art that neither of its makers could have predicted.

Making drawings together in this way is exciting. It's a fun new way to experience (the by now 'retro') magic of sending and receiving personal mail. Its a fresh new way to relate to classmates and friends. Each postcard records a response to an 'artistic dare' as well as a sustained process characterized by reciprocal generosity and trust.

Friends share ideas and techniques with friends through making postcards together. I might always draw one way, in one style, using a familiar set of techniques; and so your drawing is a stranger in my art world. Do I welcome your approach to my initial idea? Does your way somehow work with mine? Why does or doesn't it work? Practice leads to analysis and this all takes time, because finding the best solutions to visual problems will not be an instant thing. Solving creative problems together involves thought, experimentation, imagination, and care.

The Postcards between Friends exhibition showcases the collaborative postcards made by the four class groups of Lingnan University students who participated in drawing courses offered by the Visual Studies Department between 2012 and 2014. It places these works alongside those that originally inspired them - works of their teacher, Carol Archer, in collaboration with five Australian artist-friends: Anna Couani, Loene Furler, Kit Kelen, Virginia Shepherd and Sue Rawlinson.

  • Colours of dementia : a community art facilitation programme for people with dementia by Suk Mun, Sophia LAW (羅淑敏)

Colours of dementia : a community art facilitation programme for people with dementia

    Suk Mun, Sophia LAW (羅淑敏)

Colours of Dementia was a trial art facilitation programme for dementia care in a community setting led by Prof. Sophia Law, Associate Professor of the Department of Visual Studies at Lingnan University. The programme was supported by the Hong Kong Alzheimer's Disease Association (HKADA) and Art for All. The funding came from Prof. Law's Education for Service-learning Faculty Award (2013) from the Lingnan Foundation.

The programme, which ran from December 2013 to June 2014, consisted of a series of eighteen specially designed creative workshops for 14 elders, aged 59 to 94, who were suffering from mild to advanced dementia. A group of volunteer participants, including three relatives, two social workers, five elder students and three youths, were recruited as observers. To provide them with some basic knowledge about dementia, art and creativity, the volunteers received ten hours of lectures given by a geriatrician, a professional artist and an academic professor prior to the beginning of the workshops. Each of the observers was paired with an elder enrolled in the programme; they observed the same elder in all of the workshops. Relatives and caregivers accompanying the elders to the workshops were also invited to join the workshops.

The title, Colours of Dementia, refers to the images produced by the elders with dementia. These images reflect the individuality of each elder, reminding us of their distinctiveness and uniqueness as people. Through these colours, we are able to connect to them as individuals.

  • Intertextuality : a residency project at Lingnan University 2013 = 互為文本 by Chun Fai CHOW (周俊輝), Michelle LEE (李可穎), and Ivy MA (馬琼珠)

Intertextuality : a residency project at Lingnan University 2013 =

Chun Fai CHOW (周俊輝), Michelle LEE (李可穎), and Ivy MA (馬琼珠)

The intertextual works articulate their meanings through the process of creation but not through the artists alone. The significances and meanings of the artworks are produced by the copying and referencing of texts that already exist. Creators of these 'new' works forgo the identity as an author, the tracing of originality and the following of reading habits and traditions are to be violated. The process of reading, deciphering and judging of the artworks injects new meanings into the original texts written by the old masters; any blockages or fragmentation that happens in the process will further promote the conceptualisation and production of new creations.

The exhibition emerges from and transcends two projects - A Residency Project at Lingnan University 2013 and Painting On & On.

Painting On & On is an initiative started in Spring 2011 by Hong Kong painters; there were exhibitions and a series of discussions with various motifs being organised throughout these two years. I invited Ivy Ma and Michelle Lee Ho Wing to join this exhibition entitled "Intertextuality" initiated by me, together with the twenty-four students in my class from the Artists' Residency programme at Lingnan University. The artworks to be shown will respond to the theme, and Jeannie Wu is my co-curator for this exhibition.
