Workshop

The creation of a traditional Chinese book involves compiling content, transcribing, engraving, printing, and binding. Woodblock printing can be traced back to the early Tang Dynasty in China. It was a revolutionary invention for the dissemination of knowledge and culture. Chinese bookbinding techniques and styles have evolved over time, each with unique characteristics of its era. This workshop has been designed and organized to showcase the traditional printing and binding process of Chinese books. The workshop aims to help participants appreciate the charm and artistic value of traditional Chinese books through hands-on experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to experience woodblock printing and create two types of bindings: one wrapped-back binding, which was prevalent from the early Ming Dynasty to the Jiajing period, and one thread binding, which has been popular since the late-Ming Dynasty up until today.

The 120-minute workshop includes the following activities:
- Introduction to woodblock printing and the evolution of traditional Chinese bindings
- Demonstration of and hands-on experience in woodblock printing
- Making two traditional Chinese bindings
