Lingnan University, 1888 to Present: a Pictorial History
Lingnan University traces its origins back to 1888, when the American Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions founded the Christian College in Canton, China. This College became the Canton Christian College in 1903 and eventually Lingnan University in 1927. The University has made an enormous contribution to the history of Chinese education. The University ceased to hold classes in 1952.
Through the efforts of University alumni, Lingnan College was re-established in 1967 to continue the fine traditions of the University in Hong Kong. In 1978, the College was registered under the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance and received partial government financial assistance. The College has progressed since 1991 from being a post secondary college to one of the degree-conferring tertiary institutions funded by the University Grant Committee of Hong Kong. In 1995, the College moved to its new campus in Tuen Mun. In July 1999, the College attained self-accreditation status and the University title.
On display here are selected photos recalling the university's long and colourful history. Committed to providing a liberal arts education, Lingnan University posses a to bright future in the local tertiary education in the years ahead.
嶺南大學溯源於一八八八年美國海外傳道長老會在廣州創辦的格致書院。一九零三年格致書院改名為嶺南學堂，並於一九二七年正名為嶺南大學。長時期對近代中國教育作出了重大貢獻，大學於一九五二停止授課。
一九六七年嶺南校友為繼承嶺南大學傳統，以嶺南書院為名，於香港司徒拔道復校。學院於一九七八年正式成為專上學院，獲得政府部分資助。一九九一年，學院獲得「大學教育資助委員會」資助，並成為一所頒授學位的大專院校。一九九五年嶺南學院遷入新建的屯門校園。一九九九年七月，嶺南學院取得自我評審資格，正名為嶺南大學。
