Description

Hong Kong is a multicultural city, but the term 'ethnic minorities' often carries a pejorative meaning - 'minorities' (as opposed to 'expats'), tends to refer to those who are in the lower socio-economic ebb, and face social and everyday marginalization. Yet some ethnic/ racial 'minority' youths have strived to realize their aspiration, in Hong Kong, and make their mark with their creative talents, while expressing their attachment to the city where they feel belong.

Opening remarks is given by Ms Aggie LAM and Prof. Lisa LEUNG. The seminar "Celebrating Diverse Ethnicities, Recognizing Minority Talent - Our Stories" 多元種族精英—我們的故事 invites some of these youths to share their stories of success, but more importantly to discuss their views on the prospects of realizing cultural and racial diversity in Hong Kong: what makes a place 'cosmopolitan'? They would share their experience of coping with life as a migrant, their struggles and ways to overcome problems in their new domicile, and managing racial aggression. Invited guests include Ms. Fariha Salma Deiya BAKAR, Ms Devi NOVIANTI, Danny K. and Robby.

The discussion would also include a launch of the book “Ethnic Minorities, Media and Participation in Hong Kong: Creative and Tactical Belonging“ authored by Prof. Lisa LEUNG. Stand-up comedian Mr. Vivek MAHBUBANI is invited to discuss with Prof. Lisa LEUNG. The book launch session is moderated by Prof. Denise TANG.
