Description

In the book Hong Kong's New Identity Politics: Longing for the Local in the Shadow of China (Routledge Contemporary China Series, 2019), Ip Iam-Chong uses Hong Kong as a case study to examine how the production of desires for "the local" lies at the heart of global cultural economy. Perhaps more so than many other places, and now more than any other time, the making of a local identity has for Hong Kong evolved through the interplay of neoliberalism, postcoloniality and complex reactions to lived anxieties and uncertainties. As the city’s role as an international economic hub has diminished and its relationship with Mainland China intensified, the local people have been looking for ways to define a "Hong Kong" identity vis-à-vis threats from outside. Ip analyses the working and reworking of power relations and modes of agency in this global city.

The book launch was co-organised by the Centre for Cultural Research and Development, and Master of Cultural Studies of Lingnan University in conjunction with Hong Kong Arts Centre. After a short presentation, the author was joined by scholars from the disciplines of Cultural Studies and Hong Kong Studies in some focused discussions.
