Positioning herself as a feminist cultural studies practitioner, Dr Chan Shun-hing reflects upon her life engaging In research, teaching, and community building in the context of Hong Kong cultural studies and feminist activism. Issues to be discussed include in what way important concepts such as difference, negotiation, subjectivities, everyday life politics, and so on are useful to analyze various kinds of practices and representations in researches; in what way research work and community building can be mutually enhanced; students as community and cultural studies pedagogy; the marginalization of feminist researcher in mainstream academy; and so on.

Dr Chan Shun-hing works as assistant professor in the Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University. She is also the coordinator of the Gender and Everyday Life Research Cluster, Kwan Fong Cultural Research and Development Programme of Lingnan University. She got her PhD in modern Chinese literature from Peking University. Her research areas include gender and everyday life, gender and narratives, Modern Chinese literary studies, Hong Kong Studies, culture and tourism. She has been participating in the feminist movement in Hong Kong for more than twenty years. Her book publications include Narrative and Gender in Contemporary Chinese Literature (1995), The Reception and Transformation of Socialist Realism in China (2000), 1962: Interstitial Survival (2002), Women, Nation and Feminism (co-edited translated work) (2004), and others.

Cultural Studies Seminar Series, 2005-06

The public seminar was part of the Cultural Studies Seminar Series, an ongoing series of informal talks, jointly organized by the Department of Cultural Studies and Kwan Fong Cultural Research and Development Programme (KFCRD), Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, in which researchers in dialogue with leading cultural critics, designers, producers and entrepreneurs working in and around Hong Kong. Aimed at an undergraduate audience, the Seminar used a “chat show” format to encourage students to join in the discussion of new cultural research and development projects.
