Abstract
We define Generation Y as the demographic cohort from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. People who belong to the Generation Y in mainland China and the Hong Kong SAR were selected as samples. 30 samples from Nanjing, Guangzhou and the Hong Kong SAR were selected by the "snowball sampling method" for in-depth interviews in order to understand their behavioral patterns in geographical mobility by work and their encounters. Each city covers 10 cases. Through the in-depth interviews, we would like to understand their behavioral pattern through work to internal or external migration. The findings provide a glimpse on background and reasons for geographical mobility through work, how family change impacts on their behavioral patterns, and their encounters in work in the host community. The reasons why gender differences were found in geographical mobility and how family care and family relationship affected their behavior were discussed in detail.
