Abstract

This article seeks to provide an overall assessment of China’s long-distance trade in three periods—Song (especially the eleventh century) , Yuan and Ming (1271-1570) and Qing (roughly 1600- 1800)—that have been predicated on the two transformations hypotheses. A survey of long-term changes in waterway transports is used here as an indirect but reliable method for measuring the size of domestic trade in the eight centuries.
