Abstract

Word order is an important way expressing grammatical meaning in Chinese, but there are some differences in word order between "Hongkong Chinese" and Chinese. For example, in "Hongkong Chinese" there can be a subject in the clause introduced by the conjunction "bing (并)"; "bingqie (并且)" can be placed after the subject; and the aspect markers "guo (過)" and "le (了)" can be attached to the first verb in a V+V construction. Influenced by English there appear post attributives in "Hongkong Chinese"; influenced by Cantonese "duo (多)" and " shao (少)" served as adverbial in Chinese are placed after verbs as complements. Word order is closely related to the function and grammatical meaning of words. "Qishi (其實)" in "Hongkong Chinese" can be used to ease the tone and change the topic, which is the result of its change in word order.
