Description

How can new approaches to innovation be harnessed to the challenges of urban sustainability? Drawing upon the fifty-year history of international research in innovation and sustainability at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex, Professor Smith shows how approaches to promoting innovation have changed over time, and how they are changing now. With social pressure for sustainable development growing experiments are now underway for a new approach dedicated to transformative innovation. The talk illustrates what it means in practice to promote transformative innovation: activities that go beyond optimising and making more efficient urban systems for mobility, energy, housing, production, leisure and so forth, and which seek instead to transform incumbent systems and bring about radically different alternatives.
