Public Lecture

The imperial printing endeavors at the Ming court stood as a prime example of the bookmaking industry during the Ming dynasty and served as a vital component in the genealogy of official bookmaking by the central government across successive dynasties. It was often believed that while the imperial publications were beautifully made and well-bound, the quality was not good as the production was overseen by eunuchs. This talk delves into the artistic value of the imperial publications through visual imagery and explores the intimate interaction between the imperial publications and court politics through examining the variation in publication volume and the characteristics of their contents, leading to the idea that all Ming imperial publications must serve a discernible political purpose and were the material carrier and a vital conduit for the political discourse and rituals at the Ming court. On that account, the academia has greatly undervalued the Ming imperial printing, which should be positioned as part of the important literature cluster of Ming politics and culture, and their academic value merits a thorough reassessment.
