The combination of shuo and yu and the stylistic studies on A New Account of Tales of the World
摘要 Abstract
關於《世説新語》的文體特質，歷來争論不休。實際上，《世説新語》既有“説”的傳統特質，又有“語”的固有品格，是“説”“語”的結合體。從“説”體來説，《世説新語》既傳承了經傳文字的奇巧，又繼承了史傳文字的故事性，還有論述文字的“斷辭”之美；從“語”體來説，《世説新語》具有語録、口語化、簡潔性等特徵。“説”“語”結合，使《世説新語》在文體特徵上，語奇顯機鋒、問答出辯才、對答有斷辭、對比出雅趣、言簡有情節，給人耳目一新之感。
Ceaseless debates have been conducted over the stylistic features of A New Account of Tales of the World, which combines the characteristics of shuo 説 (telling) and yu 語 (language). In terms of shuo, A New Account of Tales of the World inherited the ingenuity of Confucian classics, the narrative character of historical writings, and the rhetoric of argumentative essays. Concerning yu, it has the characteristics of quotation, colloquialism, and conciseness. The combination of shuo and yu infused A New Account of Tales of the World with refreshing stylistic features such as sharp and witty speeches, eloquence and rhetoric in dialogues, elegance in comparisons, and emotion expressed through brief words.
