Literary landscapes of times in A New Account of Tales of the World

Abstract

Literary writing thrived on orality in response to the popularity of pure intellectual conversations in the Wei and Jin dynasties. Its immediacy was prominently emphasized to satisfy the contextual needs of public performance. Famous literary figures’ sayings were immeasurably important in the circulation of texts. Because texts were primarily materialized and circulated as handwritten manuscripts, authors often revised readers’ feedback as they wished. On the part of literary reception, readers valued whether they felt their personalities matched the authors’ and whether they felt sympathetic in reading literary works. The thriving aesthetic format at the time provided readers with possibilities for literary reception as they understood literature from various perspectives through painting, calligraphy, and other art forms.
