Abstract

Chapters in Beyond Boundaries: East & West Cross-Cultural Encounters mainly derive from the 2009 conferences at St. Andrews, but also include additional papers investigating East-West cultural exchanges and interactions, spanning several countries, centuries and disciplines. This book encompasses the cutting edge research of the people involved, and advocates a multiplicity of ethnicities, specialities, as well as artistic and socio-cultural perspectives. The subjects range from archaeology, art history and photography, to conservation, sociology and cultural studiesm with cross-disciplinary examples of classical, modern and contemporary periods. This volume seeks to inspire new ideas and stimulate further scholarly debate on the convergence, dissimilarities and mutual influences of the visual arts and materials culture of Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the United States.
