Abstract
This project looks into Hong Kong students' awareness of and attitudes to British and American accents. 59 subjects, who were all Form 6 and Form 7 students of a local secondary school, completed a questionnaire in which they were asked to evaluate the two accents and distinguish them from one another, based on the news extracts they listened to. The news extracts were taken from BBC news and CNN World News beforehand. Similar to my expectations, they gave more positive reactions to the British accented extract than the American accented one, but fail to differentiate them. Possible explanations for these findings and suggestions are given.
