Abstract
The title of my doctoral thesis (completed 2006) was “Frames, Flows, Feminist Aesthetics: Paintings by Judy Watson, Cai Jin and Marlene Dumas”. With the publication of this article I fulfilled my goal of publishing on all three painters in venues appropriate to the themes, methods and intended audience of my writing on those artists. In this case that venue was an issue of n. paradoxa—the only international journal devoted to scholarly and critical writing by women art historians, critics and artists on visual art by contemporary women artists—which was specifically devoted to feminist aesthetics. The paper interrogates a “botanical turn” apparent in the work of women artists from China, and asks what this tendency reveals about contemporary Chinese notions of the feminine. Its contribution is significant not least because it helps to redress the gender bias that currently exists in curatorial practices and scholarship on contemporary Chinese painting.
