Abstract
This article, in a top-ranked journal for general philosophy, has been presented as an invited talk on two occasions, and is a reflection of my continuing interest in criteria of identity. My purpose in the paper is to show that a simple principle (known as Locke’s Principle or Locke’s Thesis) can be used as a criterion of identity for material objects, contrary to what a number of philosophers have claimed. In part, the paper is a response to Leon Horsten’s article in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, which criticizes one of my earlier articles on this topic. However, Horsten and I have also co-authored two articles on criteria of identity. One of these articles has been cited outside philosophy (psychology and computer science). Both articles are cited in Timothy Williamson’s updated version of Identity and Discrimination. More recently, I have co-authored another paper on criteria of identity with two Lingnan colleagues.
