Abstract

This is an output related to my background as an art historian specializing in Chinese art, one of the priority areas of our Visual Studies Programme. Instead of taking a conventional approach to traditional Chinese landscape painting, the article adopts an interdisciplinary approach by situating the subject in relation to philosophical tendencies and cultural history. It demonstrates the benefits of adopting a Visual Studies approach to the ancient tradition of Chinese landscape painting. This approach involves careful consideration of the tradition’s philosophical and cultural contexts, as well as analysis of relevant aesthetic and artistic aspects of the phenomenon.
