Abstract
Drawing on lengthy interviews with the actors, cinematographer, editor, and director who produced the acclaimed Dogme 95 film Italian for Beginner’s, this book provides the first account of the Dogme rules’ implications for the agency of specific practitioners. The manifesto-based movement known as Dogme 95 had previously been broadly understood in terms of a concept of creativity under constraint (also in Hjort’s earlier work, e.g. Purity and Provocation). Lone Scherfig’s “Italian for Beginners” demonstrates that a given practitioner’s role within the overall collaborative process is decisive for the creativity-enhancing impact of the rule-governed framework. The book builds on the author’s interest in practitioner’s agency and makes an original contribution to the study of collaborative authorship inasmuch as offers conceptual clarification informed by a specific case study, fieldwork (including the author’s observation of Scherfig’s shooting of An Education at the Twickenham Studios in London), and interview work.
