Description

This seminar revisits the musicians migrated from Mainland China to Hong Kong in the 1940s, including Hu Ran (1912-1971), Zhao Mei-bo (1905-2001), Hwang Yau-tai (1912-2010), Lin Sheng-shih (1914-1991), Shao Guang (1919-1983), Yip Shun-chi (1926-1997) and Harold H.T. Wei (1906-1993). They had their own music career in the Mainland, but the Civil War forced them to come to Hong Kong in the 1940s. As their values and educational backgrounds were different from the Hong Kong intelligentsia, various forms of undue prejudice hindered their music career. However, they still had impact on the ecology of music in Hong Kong in the 1950s. For these migrant musicians, 1940s and 1950s is a painful era, from which they had also derived enchanting moments.
