Abstract
I shall consider here the extent to which feelings of pain or discomfort during learning are preventable and the extent to which they are an inevitable part of the process of open and distance learning. I shall also consider the possibilities and limitations of strategies other than the ‘prevention’ of pain, such as ‘masking’, ‘soothing’, and ‘working with and through’ feelings, and the special challenges posed by the open and distance context.
