Abstract
This paper represents the findings of my research into the Korean wave so far. It attempts to carry out a comparative analysis of the Japanese and Korean wave in terms of distribution, production as well as consumption. It first provides an overview of the extent of 'Hallyu" phenomenon across Asia. By using textual analysis, it compares the visual and cultural meanings of Japanese and Korean dramas. It delves into the similar/ differing reception and consumption of Korean dramas across China, Taiwan and Hong Kong to problematize the notion of cultural proximity as the easy answer for the successful circulation of Korean dramas across the region. I held focus groups of mainly university students in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, both male and female on their reception of the Korean dramas, Such comparative audience study will hope to throw light on the relationship between TV dramas and the audience, in the political, economic and cultural milieu that complicates the dynamics of media tonality across Asia.
