Translation studies in China after 1978 : a case study on Luo Xinzhang

There has been great progress in the field of translation studies in China since the end of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and the launch of China's reform (1978). Different scholars in the field of translation studies have tried to develop translation studies as an independent discipline in China through various methods. Some have tried to introduce Western theories of translation to China, and others, e.g. Luo Xinzhang, endeavored to develop Chinese theories in the field through exploring Chinese thinking on translation based on China’s own cultural traditions. This article will investigate the development of translation studies in China after 1978 through a case study on Luo Xinzhang. an important translator and also one of the representative translation scholars in China. Luo believes that China has long had her own translation theories which are rooted in her unique classical literary discourses and aesthetics, and maintains that this system of theorizing largely revolves around the concepts as advocated by translators/scholars like Dao An. Yan Fu. Fu Lei and Qian Zhongshu in different periods of Chinese history. Luo’s idea offers inspiration and provides momentum for Chinese scholars, stimulates interest in the Chinese tradition of theorizing translation, and suggests an alternative direction for the field.
