Abstract

Many years of good practice, effective teaching and accumulated pedagogical experience enable Chinese Language Education and Assessment Centre (CLEAC) senior staff to make sound choices on instructional methods' and strategies, exercise linguistic judgment, and consolidate knowledge and in-depth understanding of students' learning environment. In this light, this Teaching Development Grant (TDG) is applied for:(1) supporting the sharing of sound teaching skills and pedagogical understanding between the experienced and the young staff members in the CLEAC in order to enhance on-going critical reflection about our daily teaching;(2) bring in external scholars for updating the state of art among our staff in language teaching; and(3) consolidating and applying our good practice in developing new course materials for LCC101 Practical Chinese I for the future 3-3-4 education system. The new teaching materials in LCC101 will contain four distinctive features: (1) modernize the existing course content in LCC101, the existing textbook was developed at least ten years ago and can no longer meet current students' learning needs; (2) extend learning beyond the classroom by developing on-line LCCIOI Putonghua exercises and language assessments; (3) incorporate preparation for the National Putonghua Proficiency Test (PSC) into the new teaching materials; and (4) enable us in future to expand students' learning arena beyond the classroom by incorporating more multi-media materials in teaching - not only for LCC101 but also for other LCC courses as well. This portion of e-material development for general purposes will be in another project separate from this one.
