Abstract

Since the policy of reform and open to the world was pur sued, Western semionc theory has exerted ce1tain influences upon academic clicles in China. But, to a great extent, it was confined to the study of artistic signs. In fact, the study of art istic signs only coristitutes a branch of semiotics which compre hend studies of religion, folk custom, mass media and other cul tural phenomena. In such a broad scme, semiotic study in China is in its initiai stage. Twosidcd missions are required to accomplish: both a constant translation and intfoduction of foreign classical works and latest research achievements in this field; and a conscientious sort- out of ancient Chinese semiotic thoughts and academic dialogues with foreign scholars: which facilitates the establishment of a more peifect semiotic theory.
